My Dear Old Chap

Test Match Special

channel 9 team

Henry Blofeld

Henry Blofeld's broadcasting career began at the start of the seventies and in 1972 he joined BBC's Test Match Special for two of the one-day matches against Australia. He has been a regular member of this famous commentary team ever since and after the departure of John Arlott and Brian Johnston, has become the great character of the show. His rich, plummy tones are known and loved worldwide for he has done much commentary on both television and radio while covering cricket overseas. 'Blowers' as he is fondly known, has a tremendous zest for life; his broadcasts are always lively and full of humour and he is famous for the way in which he paints the picture for listeners omitting no detail, down to the pigeons, aeroplanes, red buses and helicopters. And in his one-man show he tells uproarious stories from the commentary box as well as others about his wide circle of friends who range from Dad's Army's Clive Dunn through Noel Coward and Ian Fleming who pinched his name for James Bond's arch enemy, and onto the blind pianist, George Shearing. Anyone who has been to one of these shows will know just how funny he is! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see and hear one of sport’s best loved personalities.  IF HIS mother had not been christened Grizel, the old Etonian might not have nurtured the seeds of humour, which now sprout from him as plentifully as cravats at a vintage car rally. It bubbles all the time, but emerges defiantly when, in response to a question, he explains that the 31 days he spent in a coma, after pedalling his bicycle under a bus, were “not really funny enough” for his comedy routine.Well, we can all understand that. The accident also hindered his promising career as a batsman of cavalier dash.

But it gave us Blowers, a twinkling charmer in soft-soled shoes; a chap more English than a pavilion clock, whose voice has ripened like a russet apple in a sunny orchard, brushed occasionally by a hint of hanky-panky.Henry “Blowers” Blofeld was part of the Radio Three cricket commentary team in the glory days of Brian (Jonners) Johnston, John Arlott, Don (the Alderman) Mosey, Trevor (the Boil) Bailey, Freddie Trueman and others.Predictably, it was Jonners, who, in that effervescent public school spirit, chose most of the nicknames, including that of our man Blowers, who is performing his two-hour, one-man show all over the country in 2008  .Although he is still a cricket broadcaster, Blowers is now almost as well-known as the commentator in the Quality Standard English meat TV advertisements, featuring caricatures of Allan Lamb and Ian “Beefy” Botham. Hampshire County Cricket Club
One of the most forward thinking Cricket Clubs in the UK, Hampshire Cricket is proud of its 140 year history and its ambition and commitment to Cricket in the future
Hampshire first played first-class cricket in 1864, and first competed in the County Championship in 1895, the sixth year in which the Championship was held. They were winners in 1961 and 1973. They also won the NatWest Trophy (now the C&G Trophy in 1991, the now-defunct Benson&Hedges Cup in 1988 and 1992, and the Sunday League in 1975, 1978 and 1986. On 3 September 2005 Hampshire won the C&G Trophy by 18 runs, including a century from Zimbabwean Sean Ervine, against Warwickshire.

Players
Their current captain is legendary Australian Test bowler, Shane Warne, and vice-captain is England spinner Shaun Udal.
Famous players include England cricket captains CB Fry, David Gower and Lionel Hallam Tennyson, 3rd Baron Tennyson; West Indian greats Gordon Greenidge Andy Roberts and Malcolm Marshall; Barry Richards of South Africa; commentator and broadcaster Mark Nicholas; England Test caps John Crawley ; Robin Smith; Kevin Pietersen; and Australians Simon Katich, Matthew Hayden and Michael Clarke.

Their home ground is the Rose Bowl, which is located at West End, near Southampton. They moved to the newly-built Rose Bowl in 2001 after they left the County Ground, in Northlands Road Southampton, which had been their home since 1885. The team had also played occasional matches in Portsmouth, Basingstoke and Bournemouth before moving all competitive matches to the Rose Bowl.

The formation of the original Kent County Cricket Club took place in Canterbury in August 1842, and played its initial first-class match against All-England that same month. On March 1 1859 there was a substantial reorganisation and the present Kent CCC was formed. Kent had been proclaimed Champion County in 1837, and held the title through most of the 1840s. However, they did not claim it again before the formation of the County Championship as we know it in 1890.

Somerset County Cricket Club

Somerset County Cricket Club was first formed in August 1875, following a cricket match at Sidmouth between the Gentlemen of Somerset and their Devon hosts, in which the visitors were successful. Originally the idea of those who had formed the County Club was not to have a home ground, but to take their matches to different grounds around Somerset. When the team played in Taunton they chose Fullands School as the venue, which at the time was one of the best in the region.

The Somerset team remained nomadic until 1881, when Taunton Athletic Club opened a sports centre on the Priory Fields next door to the River Tone, which soon became the home to the County Club.Somerset played their first 'home' match during 1882 and during that year one of the teams to pay a visit were the Australian tourists.Initially Somerset did not enjoy first class status, but after winning the 'second-class championship' in 1890 first class status followed in 1891 and since then the Club has enjoyed a long and colourful history, with many ups and downs, both on and off the pitch.

Whatever the fortunes of the team on the field the Club has remained at it's County Ground home, which it has owned since it was first acquired by the then secretary Henr y Murray-Anderdon, just before the start of the 20th Century.Down the years Somerset has had many colourful and influential characters playing for them including Lionel Palairet, Sammy Woods, Jack White, Arthur Wellard and Harold Gimblett, who all left their mark on the Club before the 2nd World War. However it was not until the late 1970's and early 1980's that Somerset won it's first trophy, but when it did the Club enjoyed a golden era winning five competitions in as many years.

The young side that had been brought together under the watchful eye of Brian Close included Ian Botham, Viv Richards and Joel Garner who were Captained by Brian Rose, who is now the Director of Cricket at the Club.Following the 'Glory Years' the Club's loyal supporters had to wait a further 18 years before they enjoyed the sweet taste of success again, which they did in 2001 when they lifted the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy. Further success followed four years later with winning the Twenty20 Cup and now with a young team full of exciting talent, the Club that was formed in Devon 131 years ago, looks to be on the verge of another golden era and will be bidding to win the one trophy that has eluded them up until now - the coveted County Championship

Cricket Match
The Editor's Cricketing Story
England Their England Re-Visited
Cricket Match

The two most popular British Sports are Football and Cricket. I was no more than an eager participant at both games. I have been privileged to be in the company of some of the greats in both sports and even been in the same team if not in the same league. Anecdotes and stories about these sports abound. Sometimes they are funny. Others...well if W.G.Grace was alive to-day, he’d turn in his grave! In the early sixties I used to make up the numbers for Finchley Cricket Club. Because I was unemployable I used to also get invited to make up numbers at other matches. Finchley ,at that time, had a wonderful captain named Ron Howe. When you played for Ron every match seemed to go to the last ball and have an exciting ending. I believe he played Minor Counties cricket for Hertfordshire.

Anyway on this particular summer's day he had passed my name on to a chap called John Gardner. John Gardner was a rich man who promoted and enjoyed cricket. I believe he actually paid for Worcestershire to go on a pre season foreign tour once. However he ran a cricket team aptly names FORK. This stood for ” Friends of the Right Kidney”. So on this day I was invited by John to turn out for his team against Esher Cricket Club during their cricket week.

This was indeed a privilege. So after whitening my boots and pads and pressing my whites I headed off down the A3 to Esher.

By 10.30a.m. I arrived at their most pleasant ground in leafy Surrey. John Gardner was there to meet me. A bigger than life man in all dimensions. In fact someone once confided in me that when he was batting if you hit him in front it was LBW and if you hit him behind it was a wide. I was greeted with thestatement ” Wilfred Isaacs has sent two young South African cricketers down to play. Will you open with one- the other will go in No 3. Show them the ropes.” I cant be sure but I think these two young South Africans were Mike Procter and Barry Richards.

The bar was already open. Well bar is really a bit of a misnomen. It was a bathtub filled with ice and Lanson Black Label Champagne. To enliven the liver I partook of the bar and by 11 o'clock I was in the mood to face Trueman, Tyson, Holding and Wesley Hall with no fear. Out I went to bat and scored 24 in the first 5 balls before being caught on the boundary off the sixth ball.

I therefore had a chance to return to the bar. By lunch we were 241-1 wicket. By now I was having a convivial time with other team members. Names I cant remember.

One was a former captain of Northamptonshire who had turned up with everything but his Zimmer frame. whether it was his health or the Lanson Black Label he found it difficult to walk and when we fielded stayed in one place throughout the fielding period.

Another was one of the Cheeseman family. Very wealthy with a Lamborghini filled with beautiful girls. I think he parked the car with him at second slip. He played for Berkshire I was informed.

There was a thin Thespian with shaking hands. In fact he told me he went to the doctor over this problem. The doctor asked him if he drank and he replied ” Not much I keep spilling it.” It was obvious he was going to be at first slip.

Then there was Gardner himself. When we fielded the ball would roll under him and he would stamp and ask if had stopped it.

Esher C.C. was famous for its Port after lunch. I remember having a convivial lunch of claret and port with Esher’s wicket-keeper- a chap called Marques- who had played Rugby for England. Then to a comfortable deck-chair to sleep off the excellent lunch.
I believe we had declared with some telephone number of a score and Procter and Richards still batting. Now Fork took to the field.

Procter and Richards had to open the bowling as everyone else was either incapable, drunk, or in the case of Cheeseman still dealing with one of his accompanying ladies. I don't remember the result. However this motley lot in the field would have outdone any Mac Sennett comedy.

The ex-Northampton captain stood at either silly mid -on or off depending on which end was bowling. The man with shaking hands was at first slip, John Gardner was at second, third and fourth slip with a bottle of Lanson at gully. Cheeseman seemed to appear to bowl but never to field.  There was a character wearing an Oxford University Blue sweater who didn't seem to have much of a clue. All he seemed to do was polish the ball and give it to the umpire, we later found out that his blue was for marbles.

To cap it one of the Esher batsmen, with the thickest pair of glasses I've ever seen, when asked by the umpire if he wanted to take guard uttered ” No thanks I've played here before.” But the piece de resistance was the player with the wooden leg. Whilst coming up to bowl  his wooden leg got caught in one of those holes from which the pitch is watered. It took two engineers and a doctor over twenty minutes to free him from this position.

After the game Gardner asked me to put my name and details in his address book for future reference. The details on the line above were those of one E.R.Dexter. That was the nearest I ever got to the big time. I was never invited again.

The design of the site may be nothing out of the ordinary but the match reports and latest news are written from a fans perspective and pull no punches in their analysis. The site is also updated on a daily basis for those who can't get by without their fix of cricketing information.
England's Barmy Army
www.barmy-army.com
A must
Loved and hated in equal measure, the Barmy Army are those sunburned loons you see downing lager and singing songs wherever England are losing their latest Test Match.
Fresh from their latest jaunt to South Africa, this ramshackle but absorbing site features diary entries from their travels, together with details of their charity work and audio files of the gang in full voice.

Cricket Societies  There are cricket lovers societies all over UK as well as national ones and the tendency has spread worldwide. the old NCA had the Council of Cricket Lovers Societies as a member. Such collective love for and no doubtwisdom of the game cricket was considered likely to be  able to make a useful contribution. Not so for the Corporate ECB who have no time was such peripheral nostalgia in running its very modern sports business. Societies meet regularly usually with a well known cricket person or two as a speaker(s) to kick off discussion and often publish regular journals. This is cricinfo's fairly comprehensive list which also includes some Associations  which are different and shown elsewhere on this site.
