Taunton began as a Saxon village and was called Tone Tun. The Saxon word tun means farm or estate. The word Tone is Celtic and may mean roaring river. By the 10th century Taunton had grown from a village into a small town (although it would seem very small to us with a population of only a few hundred). In AD 904 a charter was given to Taunton by King Edward the Elder  . Taunton was also a fortified settlement called a burh. In the late 9th century Alfred the Great created a network of fortified towns across his kingdom. These were called burhs . The burh of Taunton would have been surrounded by a ditch and rampart with a wooden palisade on top. By the 10th century Taunton had a mint and a market, which was held on The Parade. By the time of the Domesday Book (1086) the population of Taunton was about 1,500. In Thomas Hardy's Books Taunton was renamed Toneborough. In 1935 Taunton was made the county town instead of Weston Super Mare, an indication that Taunton was growing in size and importance.

THE SWORD IN THE STONETaunton Stone

It is believed that the legend of King Arthur & The Knights of the Round Table  is based on Cerdic- and you may visit the Sword in The Stone just outside Taunton Castle. Have a pull - you could be the next King of Wessex.

Taunton Marathon
The half marathon course is one lap, the full marathon course is two laps. Both races start and finish at the Somerset College of Arts and Technology (SCAT), Wellington Road, Taunton. From SCAT the route is through the main streets of Taunton out into the Somerset countryside on the B3227 through Norton Fitzwarren, turning south through Oake and Bradford-on-Tone, then back to SCAT on the A38. The course is undulating with hills at 11 and 22 miles. All full marathon runners are directed straight on when they reach SCAT unless they indicate at the end of their first lap that they are unable to complete the full distance when, if they wish, they may finish at the half stage. There are eight water and sponge stations along the route and frequent marshal points. Medical back-up is provided by the St John Ambulance.

Start time for both races is 10.30 am

Murder In Taunton
MURDER IN VIVIARY PARK?

Is Taunton the next place for Murder? After we pictured scenes at the Taunton Flower Show on Saturday August 4th & got back to our offices we noticed a rather sinister situation on one of the pictures. Surely Inspector Barnaby hasn't moved from Midsomer Norton to Taunton? Or is it just a Nettle amongst the wonderful flowers.

In Thomas Hardy's Wessex Taunton is known as Toneborough
"I find that the name Wessex is getting taken up everywhere and it would be a pity
for us to lose the right to it for lack of asserting it"

Thomas Hardy first used the term "Wessex" in his 1874 novel, Far From the Madding Crowd Hardy's vast works conformed to the region that he envisioned and called Wessex. But as Thomas Hardy himself always maintained, "This is an imaginative Wessex only". In respect of places described under fictitious or ancient names in the novels -– for reason that seemed good at the time of writing them –- and kept up in the poems –- discerning people have affirmed in print that they clearly recognize the originals: such as Shaftesbury in ‘Shaston,’ Sturminster Newton in ‘Stourcastle,’ Dorchester in ‘Casterbridge,’ Salisbury Plain in ‘The Great Plain,’ Cranborne Chase in ‘The Chase,’ Beaminster in ‘Emminster,’ Bere Regis in ‘Kingsbere,’ Woodbury Hill in ‘Greenhill,’ Wool Bridge in ‘Wellbridge,’ Harfoot or Harput Lane in ‘Stagfoot Lane,’ Hazlebury in ‘Nuttlebury,’ Bridport in ‘Port Bredy,’ Maiden Newton in ‘Chalk Newton,’ a farm near Nettlecombe Tout in ‘Flintcomb Ash,’ Sherbourne in ‘Sherton Abbas,’ Milton Abbey in ‘Middleton Abbey,’ Cerne Abbas in ‘Abbot's Cernel,’ Evershot in ‘Evershead,’ Taunton in ‘Toneborough,’ Bournemouth in ‘Sandbourne,’ Winchester in ‘Wintonchester,’ Oxford in ‘Christminster,’ Reading in ‘Aldbrickham,’ Newbury in ‘Kennetbridge,’ Wantage in ‘Alferdston,’ Basingstoke in ‘Stoke Barehills,’ and so on.

TAUNTON -St MARY MAGDALENE

Standing at an amazing 163½' high to the top of the pinnacles, St Mary's is one of the best-known examples of the exuberant Somerset towers financed by the prosperity created by the wool trade and has been the town church since 1308 - a heritage of nearly 700 years. The church’s interior is a splendour with it's Tudor ceiling of the nave and chancel adorned with a hundred or more gilded angels. The stained glass too is particularly fine with some bright rich fragments remaining from medieval times on the north side. On looking up as you leave the church you cannot help but be stunned by the drama of the beautiful west window.

I was getting bored of eating out at various Chinese/ Indian/ Cantonese etc etc so when I found there was a Greek restaurant in town I thought I would give it a go and I am very glad I did, the food is excellent, the choice outstanding, the service is spot on and they have managed to create an atmosphere where you do not feel crowded in with other customers, the music level is just right, I have been back many times and will continue to do so.

Blagdon Inn

Given a new name & new lease of life in 2004 by Steve & Sarah Rushton, this old cider house has been transformed into a stylish gastropub, yet retains its heavy beams, stone walls & fine inglenook fireplace. The Rushtons are passionate about locally sourced produce & both food & drink menus overflow with local goodies, from Devon organic soft drinks & Somerset micro-brewery beers, to Ruby Red beef from Exmoor, Brixham fish, & free-range pork reared in surrounding fields. Follow juicy scallops with bacon & balsamic dressing, by a hearty steak & kidney pie straight from the oven, then a plate of unpasteurised West Country cheeses. Orchards
In this lovely old building (Circa 1530) which boasts a wealth of period features including low beamed ceilings, inglenook fireplaces, intriguing stairways and cosy alcoves. Dining here is leisurely and relaxing yet, in this delightful country-side location, it is hard to imagine that you are just a few convenient minutes drive away from Taunton's busy town centre.Such ambience is matched by the freshly and professionally prepared dishes - the emphasis being on wholly fresh food with many vegetarian and fish specialities.

PIZZA EXPRESS

In 1965, an English eccentric entrepreneur by the name of Peter Boizot changed the face of British dining forever. He teamed up with Enzo Apicella, a fiery Italian designer, to create a new type of restaurant that shattered the mould and rewrote the rule book.Out went the dull food, lacklustre interiors and indifferent service that were the standards of the day. In came a vivid, passionate approach to dining thanks to the synergy of cultures from the two very different men - Italian flair and panache coupled with the very best of English creativity and idiosyncrasy. PizzaExpress was born.

Pizza Hut

We started our life in 1958 when Frank and Dan Carney opened the first Hut in Wichita, Kansas. The first Pizza Hut restaurant was only small, with enough room for 25 seats; the restaurant sign only had space for nine letters. Frank and Dan wanted to have 'Pizza' in the name, which left space for just 3 more letters. Because the building looked like a hut... Pizza Hut was born! Fifteen years later, the first UK restaurant opened. Since then we have grown to become the biggest Pizza Company on the planet. We're the UK's leading pizza restaurant and delivery chain too, with over 600 outlets across the country. We are part of Yum Restaurants International (who also own KFC, Taco Bell, Long John Silver's, A & W and Pizza Hut Worldwide).

SUBWAY
Deliciously filled bagettes with lovely sauces and fillings to choice.Long hours at work and hectic lifestyles mean we don’t always have time to prepare and cook healthy meals, and instead rely on grabbing something to eat on the move. The problem is, we often end up eating food that’s highly processed, packed with calories and fat, but contains little in the way of vitamins, minerals and fibre – not exactly a good foundation for a healthy diet. Fortunately though, food on the go doesn’t have to mean unhealthy food if you eat at one of the numerous SUBWAY® stores throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. Experts in toasted and cold submarine or SUB sandwiches, wraps and salads, SUBWAY® stores are well known for providing low fat and fresher alternatives to burgers, kebabs, pizza, fried chicken and fries.

Overall, the evening was superb and I would highly recommend the Willow Tree restaurant. The menu is well balanced, with the service being attentive, polite and efficient. Set within a picturesque building, the ambience is relaxed and comfortable. I am very surprised, if not astonished, at the lack of a Michelin star!   Rohan Shaikh (12 March 2007)

Melshit VICTOR'S GROUSE
CAVEAT EMPTOR WHEN BUYING MOBILE PHONES IN TAUNTON
Down here in delightful Taunton we have recently been doing a survey on the local mobile phone shops and unearthed some amazing but disturbing facts:

The Carphone Warehouse

Call Now: 0870 168 2419
21 East Street  Taunton,  Somerset, TA1 3LP

The Carphone Warehouse. is Europe's leading independent retailer of mobile phones and services, with over 2,000 stores in 10 countries. Over the past 5 years, The Carphone Warehouse has built up a significant Telecoms business, which already contributes half of the Group's revenue and is set to be a major driver of future profitable growth. Mobile phone retailers offer lots of different services and guarantees and it is vital that you shop around for the best deal tailored to your individual needs. To ensure best customer service, The Carphone Warehouse offers various guarantees to all its customers.
However
this shop has a group of ladies serving who give you erroneous information. Our reporter spoke to the Carphone Warehouse on the phone to obtain the facts. Then on visiting this shop  found that, after waiting for a long  time in a queue that the ladies, could not be bothered to assist properly, gave completely different information. On at least two instances the staff were rude and have failed to give the type of service that we have found in other Carphone Warehouse stores.

Further the Car Phone Warehouse for some reason of their own  are biased against cash customers- they state that they are only following a Government Directive! . If you buy a  Pay As You Go Phone they require £20 of units minimum to be sold for cash but only £10 if you pay by card!. Why? Is it so that they can pester you with further offers etc if they get your card details. They sell unlocked phones
Luckily there are other telephone shops in Taunton who give good polite service:

  Orange (Phones)
East Street - One of the more helpful of the local shops- but a pity that they only sell locked phones. Unfortunately my long term number was turned off for some reason only known to themselves and I had to go in to get a new number.

East Street -  Phones 4 U (Phones) The assistant was most helpful but also explained that, like Car Phone, warehouse if you buy a  Pay As You Go Phone they require £20 of units minimum to be sold for cash but only £10 if you pay by card!. They stated that this was on instruction of the telephone line providers.
County Walk.JAG (Phones) Helpful  and they sell unlocked phones.

North Street.Virgin Megastore Helpful but only sell locked phones to Virgin

North Street Vodafone. The staff are helpful but Company procedures are inflexible. Having recently changed a Direct Debit from one bank to another I had my phone disconnected because of their own error. I spent hours on the phone trying to get it rectified. They ,again, only wanted a card used. This I will not be forced into using. So I went to the Shop & tried to pay in cash- but guess what they have no facilities to accept cash for a phone bill. Inflexible & stupid.

02  are in North Street &  3 are in East Street.

This bias against people paying by cash is an insult to Customers and may well be incontravention of the Restrictive Trade Practices Act as there is obviously some sort of cartel creating this problem, which is just another way of price fixing against Cash payers. It is also an extra example of prejudice against those people who can not get banking facilities. However Cash Converters in East Street do sell Debit Mastercards and do unlock telephones! TAUNTON COUNTY CRICKET GROUND

Somerset County Cricket Club

Somerset County Cricket Club was first formed in August 1875, following a cricket match at Sidmouth between the Gentlemen of Somerset and their Devon hosts, in which the visitors were successful. Originally the idea of those who had formed the County Club was not to have a home ground, but to take their matches to different grounds around Somerset. When the team played in Taunton they chose Fullands School as the venue, which at the time was one of the best in the region.

The Somerset team remained nomadic until 1881, when Taunton Athletic Club opened a sports centre on the Priory Fields next door to the River Tone, which soon became the home to the County Club.Somerset played their first 'home' match during 1882 and during that year one of the teams to pay a visit were the Australian tourists.Initially Somerset did not enjoy first class status, but after winning the 'second-class championship' in 1890 first class status followed in 1891 and since then the Club has enjoyed a long and colourful history, with many ups and downs, both on and off the pitch.

Whatever the fortunes of the team on the field the Club has remained at it's County Ground home, which it has owned since it was first acquired by the then secretary Henr y Murray-Anderdon, just before the start of the 20th Century.Down the years Somerset has had many colourful and influential characters playing for them including Lionel Palairet, Sammy Woods, Jack White, Arthur Wellard and Harold Gimblett, who all left their mark on the Club before the 2nd World War. However it was not until the late 1970's and early 1980's that Somerset won it's first trophy, but when it did the Club enjoyed a golden era winning five competitions in as many years.

The young side that had been brought together under the watchful eye of Brian Close included Ian Botham, Viv Richards and Joel Garner who were Captained by Brian Rose, who is now the Director of Cricket at the Club.Following the 'Glory Years' the Club's loyal supporters had to wait a further 18 years before they enjoyed the sweet taste of success again, which they did in 2001 when they lifted the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy. Further success followed four years later with winning the Twenty20 Cup and now with a young team full of exciting talent, the Club that was formed in Devon 131 years ago, looks to be on the verge of another golden era and will be bidding to win the one trophy that has eluded them up until now - the coveted County Championship

Ian Botham
Sir Ian Botham
Sir Vivian Richards
Sir Vivian Richards
Wessex.me.uk  was delighted when the great Ian ‘Beefy’ Botham was awarded a knighthood by the Queen. Beefy, who has raised more than £10m for leukaemia charities (and in doing so helped to increase the survival rate of sufferers), is a true sporting hero who still stood out in an era when the best sporting stars married their talents with immense personality.

On the field there was no-one better than Beefy, he played 102 Tests for England in a career that lasted from 1974 to 1993, took 383 wickets (which remains an English record) and scored 5,200 runs. He was the fastest person (in terms of matches) to reach the landmarks of 1000 runs and 100 wickets, 2000 / 200 and 3000 / 300. He was the first person to achieve 300 wickets and 5000 runs, plus he was the first person to get over 10 wickets and 100 runs in a test match. He scored a century and took 5 wickets in an innings on 5 occasions, a feat no-one else has achieved more than twice. A former Wisden Cricketer of the year, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Sport Personality of the Year Awards in 2004 and was appointed an OBE in 1992.

Being controversial only added to his appeal. Whereas today a sportsman’s lifestyle is geared 110% towards enhancing onfield performance, Botham’s exploits are the stuff of legend. In 1986 he was briefly banned from cricket for smoking cannabis, an extramarital affair prompted a public apology to his wife, he was arrested in Australia for assault (later to be bailed by Dennis Lillee and a six-pack of beer), he held lavish parties, ate rather too well (prompting accusations of being overweight, for shame), said he’d like to send his mother-in-law to Lahore, was a legendary drinker, sledged the fielders…. you could go on for days. Oh, and he is now the face of British Beef!

The Keele Reefer Association,  will dedicate its match against Ottery St Mary on July 31 to the (playing) life and times of the great Sir Beefy, the most flamboyant and influential all-rounder ever to take the field. We salute you Sir!

In the latest edition of the cricketing bible Wisden, Sir Vivian Richards was voted one of the five greatest cricketers of the 20th century.

In the words of no lesser judge than Ian Botham, "There has never been a better player".

Whatever the nature of any specific accolade, there can be no doubt that during a test match career running between 1974 and 1991, Viv Richards proved himself one of the most accomplished, exciting and destructive batsmen that the world stage has ever seen. This autobiography, written with journalist Bob Harris, tells the story from Viv's point of view, and is pretty much what cricket fans would expect from the man who was no stranger to controversy on a number of occasions during his playing days. Richards' career in cricket is fully covered from its inception until his failure to secure appointment as coach of the West Indies side to tour England in 2000.

Playing days in England for Somerset and Glamorgan are recalled, alongside many memorable matches for the West Indies, and opinions on opponents and team-mates from around the world. Viv's great mate Botham of course features heavily, the former looking back on the special relationship they clearly had both off an on the field, where they enjoyed many a good battle. And Richards, it seems, loves nothing more than a battle.

This combative nature, along with fierce determination, allied to loyalty to friends and his beloved Antigua, and the Caribbean in general, shine through as the key themes in his success. Flavoured with a sense of humour, these characteristics ensure that Viv's story is as entertaining as the batting with which he thrilled crowds around the world. --Trevor Crowe

MR MONKEY VISITS TAUNTON

Mr Monkey in Taunton

May 2004 - Mr Monkey spends a night and a day in Taunton                Click here for The Mr Monkey Web Pages
Miss Carol had a presentation to do in Taunton, and, as neither Mr Monkey or Mr Rik had been to Taunton, they decided to go too, so she'd have someone to talk to on the train. Follow the links on the images below for more details of Mr Monkey's trip.

Thursday
Mr Monkey caught a train from Stockport, changed at Birmingham New Street, and, eventually, arrived at Taunton station.
From the station he took a taxi to the Corner House Hotel, which turned out to be on a corner. Mr Monkey's room had a fine view of a road.
After Mr Monkey's humans had a fine meal, he took them for a walk around Taunton in the dark.
He scampered along North Street, until he found a bridge, which is called, on the maps, The Bridge. Under the bridge is the River Tone, which is very dark at night.

After he'd walked around Taunton some more, he trotted down Hammett Street, which has a floodlit pillar at the end.
Eventually he got tired, and went back to the Corner House Hotel.
Friday
After Miss Carol went off in a taxi to do her presentation, Mr Monkey walked off to see what Taunton looked like by daylight.
After leaving the hotel, he went to investigate the County Hall, but decided not to go inside.

Mr Monkey was trying to find the tourist information office, but accidentally found the Vivary Park instead.
Slipping through the park gates he found this rather magnificently decorative fountain, commemerating the death of Queen Victoria.
So close to Vivary Park that you'd think they were the same place is a bit of parkland called the Wilton Lands.
Mr Monkey crossed a bridge to get to them, and enjoyed walking around by a small lake.

Leaving the park, Mr Monkey scampered back into the middle of the town, admiring the buildings as he went.
He looked both ways carefully before crossing the roads.
Mr Monkey decided to visit the Somerset County Museum, in Taunton Castle. The castle was started around 1138; for several centuries people added bits to it.Then they decided they didn't need castles any more, knocked bits of it down
(Charles II was especially annoyed because Parliamentarians held the castle throughout most of the Civil War) , let bits fall over, and built a hotel around the gatehouse. All that's really left of the castle now is the inner bailey.

They've got a variety of things in the museum. In the main museum Mr Monkey found lots of ceramics, and some horse brasses, and some bits left over from the Battle of Sedgemoor, and the shoes of a blind giant
In a side room he found a collection of steam engines that were used to power agricultural machinery.
In a gallery about archeological finds in Somerset, Mr Monkey found a Roman mosaic which someone had fixed to a wall, and a reconstruction of a prehistoric grave.
They've also got a heap of 9238 coins that a Roman buried and forgot about, and bits of Bronze Age pathway from the Somerset Levels.

Taunton was founded by a charter in 904, which was 1100 years ago, so they're having a special Taunton 1100 celebration.
The County museum has a special exhibition about the history of Taunton from prehistoric times to the 19th century. You can tell it's a special exhibition because they've been able to borrow the Codex Wintoniensis* from the British Library.
Outside the castle, Mr Monkey found a sword stuck in a stone. There didn't seem to be any explanation for it, but it's probably something to do with King Arthur.
Mr Monkey didn't try pulling the sword out of the stone, in case someone made him king of somewhere, but ran through the castle gardens, to study the outside wall of the castle.

leaving the castle gardens, Mr Monkey found the River Tone, and a place where he could see The Bridge.
He also found a little stream off the river that seemed to be controlled by a pair of sluice gates.
Mr Rik complained that he was hungry, so Mr Monkey suggested a quick visit to The Brazz, which is part of the Castle Hotel. The gateway to the left of the restaurant is the East gate of the castle, which has been sort of swallowed up by the hotel.
Wandering around Taunton, Mr Monkey noticed a sign warning that the church could take no responsiblity for anyone walking down a narrow street.

He immediately scampered down the lane, to see what the danger might be. He's such an daring monkey.
At the end of the lane, Mr Monkey found the parish church of St Mary Magdalene, which has been there since 1308.
Mr Monkey was really impressed by the tower.
Mr Monkey found his way down to the Tone, and walked along the bank, away from Taunton.

After a while he came to somewhere called the Firepool, where there's a bridge over a rather dramatic weir. Mr Monkey was crossing the bridge when he noticed a heron failing to catch its dinner.
After Mr Monkey scampered across the bridge, he paused to look back at the scary water for a moment.
Then he trotted across a second bridge, over the Bridgewater and Taunton Canal. The derelict building claims to have been a British Railways Taunton Freight Concentration Depot.
Mr Monkey nipped down from the canal bridge to inspect the canal lock,

which is where the Bridgewater and Taunton Canal opens into the River Tone.
After inspecting the canal, Mr Monkey looked at Mr Rik's watch, and found out it was time to head for home.
So he scampered up to Taunton station, and waited for his train.
The train took Mr Monkey through Bristol and up to Birmingham, where, slightly worryingly, it went into reverse.

This was obviously deliberate, because it ended up in Wolverhampton, where Mr Monkey changed for the train to Stockport, and home.
